You should not be diving without a Surface Marker Buoy. Period! We suggest that you move away from the mindset that the dive professional will take care of it for you. This is a terrible mindset to have when diving.

Some recreational divers deploy their Closed or Semi-Closed Circuit Surface markers at half of their maximum depth. Little gas is needed to deploy - controllable and ensured of a fully inflated Surface Marker on the surface due to gas expansion, and a design that does not allow gas to escape. An additional bonus is that the dive boat always follows the first few surface markers they spot. Of course, a spool is needed to go along with this style of deployment.

Lift Bags are popular with Commerical Diving Companies, or when exploration or working divers need to lift objects up underwater. Divers buying these usually already know what they want.

Surface Markers and Lift Bag come in fully closed circuit, semi-closed, or open bottom. Open Bottom Surface Markers are really ancient, and will need to tug the line constantly else gas will leak right away, which results in the SMB laying flat on the surface, defeating the purpose of carrying it. This is why we do not recommend Open Bottom Surface Markers.
